Crispy Onion Green Bean Casserole

A crispy layer of Lars Own® French Fried Onions tops this classic casserole, flavored with mushrooms and red bell peppers in a rich and creamy sauce.


3 Tbsp plus ½ Tsp salt, divided

1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed

2 Tbsp butter

1½ cups thinly sliced fresh mushrooms (about 4 ounces)

1 cup finely diced red bell pepper

¼ Tsp coarsely ground black pepper

2 Tbsp all-purpose flour

1 cup beef broth

¼ cup heavy cream

1 container (4.0 oz) Lars Own® Crispy Onions


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. In a large stockpot, bring 4 quarts of water and 3 Tbsp of the salt to a boil. Add green beans and cook until crisp-tender, 3-5 minutes. Drain beans and arrange in a shallow casserole dish; set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Add mushrooms, bell pepper, remaining salt and pepper; cook and stir 3-5 minutes until tender. Add flour and stir to coat. Add broth and cream; bring to a boil, stirring constantly until thickened.
  3. Spoon sauce evenly over green beans. Top with Lars Own® Crispy Onions. Bake in center of oven until onions are golden brown, 8-10 minutes.

Cook's tips

For a gluten-free version of this recipe, prepare sauce using gluten-free all-purpose flour blend and top with one container (3.5 oz) Lars Own® French Fried Onions.
